Orientation

General Orientation consists of two parts–an online portion and an in-store portion.  You’ll need to complete the online portion first, which will take about 60 minutes. The in-store portion will be scheduled by your Store Manager and takes about 4 hours and 30 minutes.  Bring the necessary forms with you, along with a black or blue pen, comfortable black or brown shoes, and your enthusiastic attitude!

Parking

Expect to arrive at the store so that you’re ready ten minutes before your shift starts.  Parking is free at the store; choose a parking spot further than the first five spots closest to the store.  We like to reserve those spots for our guests.  If you’re working an evening shift at the store, you’ll have the opportunity to move your vehicle a bit closer if necessary for safety reasons later in your shift.

What We Offer

Petland provides many training opportunities online at our University of Petland Canada website. A valid email is required so we can sign you up and ensure you have access to all the materials you’ll need to be able to begin working in the store.  If you can’t complete the online training, we aren’t able to put you on the schedule. Your email is not shared with any outside sources.

Online training—Before Orientation can begin, you will fill out a form called Submission to Qualify for Petland Training and email it to the Training Department. They will use the information from this form to sign you up for the University of Petland Website. After that, you will complete Online Orientation before being scheduled for In-Store Orientation.

In your first week after Orientation, take time to visit the University of Petland Website at https://uofp.ca using the credentials sent to you by email and complete the First 7 Days course in the New Hire Training section.  You’ll need to bring your certificate to your store manager or email it to your store to get paid for your time.

“Our pet counsellors are dedicated to matching the right pet with the right customer and meeting the needs of both. To our customers who already own pets, we are dedicated to enhancing their knowledge and enjoyment of the human-animal bond.”

Message from Robert & Barbara Brissette, Owners, Petland Canada:
“Everyone in our company is first and foremost, a Pet Counsellor. Everything you do in this career, you must do with the pets and the guests’ needs in mind. You will never go wrong if you always do the right thing for the guest and the pet!”
The Petland Difference:
Our company sets itself apart from the competition in several ways, and it all begins with the team members we hire. We are looking for friendly, fun, willing and motivated people.

Our culture is fun; we hold many special events including fund raisers, special community charity events as well as in store games with prizes and rewards. We have a great time while working and we never lose sight of our goals and our purpose.

We are committed to the community; the opportunities for us to reach out and support our community are endless. We are involved in spay/neuter campaigns, the pet food bank and we are dedicated to ensuring that none of our pets ever becomes a burden to any animal shelter.

Every team member has an opportunity to shine by taking five minutes each day to make a guest have an absolutely amazing and sometimes life changing experience.

Every day at Petland is the freedom to make the world a better place. There are many opportunities for personal growth and career advancement here; even our director of Operations began as a Pet Counsellor! Everyone’s potential here is unlimited!

Staff who are successful with us, are committed to upholding our Mission Statement, GAP, and our Six Golden Rules

1. Treat your customers like guests. We have all had guests in our homes, so treat them the same way you would if they were your personal guests.

2. Remember, that you are here for our guests. It is important to remember that without our guests, we would not
have jobs. You have a place in the store because of them.

3. Keep your promises. If you promise to do something for a guest or fellow staff member, Petland expects you to keep that promise.

4. Treat your co-workers the way you want to be treated. Treat other employees how you want them to treat you – with
respect. You are a team so work together as a team and have fun.

5. Always use Petland tip sheets. Behavioral, Maintenance, Environmental and Nutritional (BMEN) are the four categories that define the basic needs of all living things. In the tip sheets, Petland has included these four basic needs with almost every pet that can be adopted in our stores.

6. Have Fun. Work can be fun, and it is up to you! You have the advantage of working in a fun industry. Take an active interest in pets both in-store and outside of work. Talk to guests and co-workers about their pets. Smile, have a positive outlook and be determined to enjoy yourself.

GAP: The 3 Principles that Guide Everything we do

Guest Service: Our focus on Guest Service ensures that our guests receive the information they need to make the right decision about their pet and its care. By delivering a superior experience, we become a resource for pet owners and a place where people who love pets want to shop.

Animal Care: Our focus on Animal Care ensures that we are providing the best quality, healthy pets available to our valued guests. The teamwork and communication of all staff in each store, plays an integral role in the overall well-being of the animals in our care. We understand our pets rely on us to find them their forever homes. Our objective is to inspire our guests to want to adopt our socialized happy pets!

We provide many services for our guests’ pets such as pet grooming, dog training, and aquarium services. These things mean the relationship with our guest does not stop at the adoption; we provide care and support for the entire life of their pet.

Presentation: Presentation of the store and staff ties everything together into a visually pleasing and enjoyable environment. The guest’s perception of our store begins before they even open the front door. Making sure the store is inviting, clean, well merchandised, and the staff is in uniform, will mean guests want to return.

We know you’re the right fit when:

  • You understand that hard work and dedication to guest service, animal care and presentation are required for the success of our stores.
  • You believe in doing your very best for every guest and their pets
  • You know that ongoing education and training are the foundation of your success

Frequently Asked Questions

When beginning any new job, there are always plenty of questions.  We will do our best to answer all of them in your General Orientation and through your continued learning experiences throughout your career with us.

To get you started, here are the answers to the most common questions when starting a new job at Petland.

Will we get to play with the animals at work?
This is Petland, and animal care is a large part of our job!  We are lucky to be able to work with animals every day, but it’s work. All the animals need to be fed and cleaned up after, every day, all day long. Animals also need socialization, so you’ll spend a lot of time with guests, teaching them how to hold and care for the pets in our stores.

What kind of experience do I need? Will I receive training?
Petland is known for the Pet Experts that work in our stores.  We provide education and training from your first day with us! Our Petland University hosts both online and classroom training and you’ll be exposed to various training and programs throughout your career with us.  The learning never stops!

When and how do I get paid?
Petland employees are paid bi-weekly by direct deposit.  You’ll provide us with your banking information on your first day and you’ll get paid every second Friday.  You may not have a full two week paycheque your first time as you may have joined in between pay periods.

Cutoff for payperiods is every second Sunday and payday is the following Friday after cutoff.

How many hours will I be working?
The answer to that depends if you were hired as part time or full time.

As a general rule, if you were hired as a part-time status employee, you might work anywhere from 3 hours per week up to 32 hours per week.  The average part time employee in our company works 24 hours per week.

If you were hired in a full-time status position, you’ll work between 32-40 hours per week average.

What should I wear on my first day?
We order uniforms at Orientation, so you’ll want to wear business casual clothing to your orientation.  This means no jeans and you’ll want to wear comfortable shoes.  We’ll be walking around the store and encountering guests so it’s important to look professional.

To find out more about our uniform requirements, check this handout.

What are the benefits like at Petland?
Working at Petland has all sorts of benefits!  In addition to working in a fun environment with animals everyday, here are some examples of the benefits we offer:

  • Staff cat or dog food program
  • Staff purchase discounts
  • On-shift games and contests
  • Health & dental benefits after 6 months for full time employees
